Microtia/Atresia Repair

Microtia, also called microtia-anotia, is a congenital deformity where the pinna (outer ear) is very small and underdeveloped (microtia) or absent (anotia). It can be unilateral (one side only) or bilateral (affecting both sides). It occurs in 1 out of about 8,000–10,000 births.

Surgery to repair congenital aural atresia (CAA) is one of the most challenging operations the ear specialist faces. The goals of surgery are to provide the patient with a clean, skin-lined external auditory canal with long-term restoration or improvement in hearing.
Video is amazing (but it is not of Manny - it is another child having surgery). If you have weak stomach, please forward to 5 min 30 seconds to see the before/after pics. The video is actually taken with one of Manny's doctors, Dr. Joseph Roberson (hearing doctor). Manny's reconstructive ear surgeon is Dr. Sheryl Lewin (not shown in this video).
